Sorry #1 is Hoppin' John. Served on New Year's Day to invite prosperity in the new year. It is a traditional Southern US dish served since the 1800's, much older than Kwanzaa.
Cuzcuz Paulista is so ugly that I know a lot of people who have never tried it just by how it looks. But it is actually good.
Grew up with kugel and absolutely love it! My mom didn't make it with cheese, but made it more of a fruity dessert with raisins, apples, and cinnamon. Sweet and delicious!
